POLICE IN the Ashanti Region shot and killed a suspected armed robber in a shootout after a gang of four armed robbers undertook a robbery operation at a filling station at Ejisu-Krapa, near Kumasi, on Thursday.
Another person believed to be a member of the gang, whose identity is being withheld by the police, was later arrested at Ejisu after three suspects managed to escape.
DCOP Augustine Gyening, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said a member of the police patrol team from Ejisu was shot in the thigh by the suspects.
He disclosed that the unnamed police officer was receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The police chief said the body of the deceased, identified as Seidu Zachariah, had been deposited at the morgue, pending autopsy.
Briefing the media about the incident, the police commander said at about 8:00pm on Thursday, the gang attacked and robbed victims at the Krapa branch of the Patrol Bay filling station.
According to him, some neighbours, who witnessed the incident, alerted a police patrol team operating in the area.
He stated that when the police got to the scene, the suspected gangsters had completed their ‘operation’ and moved to the new site at Krapa.
The police patrol team chased the armed robbers, who upon seeing the police, opened fire.
DCOP Gyening said the suspects, in the process, shot and wounded a member of the police patrol team.
He said the case was being investigated and assured the public of their safety.
