Teshie citizens call for action on faulty meters

The Teshie Concerned Citizens Association (TCCA) has appealed to the President, John  Dramani Mahama, to ensure that disciplinary measures are instituted against officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) who installed faulty pre-payment electricity meters in the town.

It said the installation of the meters had led to agitations, false accusations by the ECG officials and a subsequent arrest, detention and prosecution of some residents of the town for allegedly tampering with the meters.

A petition signed by the President of the TCCA, Mr Seth Tagoe, said when the contractor installed the meters more than two years ago, he (contractor) stated that he was doing so under the instructions of Mr Mahama, who was then the Vice-President.

It stated that later, after the installations, officials of the ECG and some police personnel conducted an exercise and falsely accused the people of tampering with the meters, arrested and detained many of them in police cells at Nungua for 11 days without trial.

The case is still pending at the court, although it is more than two years since it was first heard.
The statement said some customers who  had the old post-payment meters were refused the new meters with the explanation that until they redeemed their indebtedness to the company, they would not be provided with the new meters.

Due to the situation, it noted, nearly half of the town was now in darkness.
What is worse, it said, officials of the ECG were rude to the residents and sometimes assaulted them.
The statement appealed to the President to ensure that residents who were “manhandled” by both officials of the ECG and the police were compensated.

It also called for the re-installation of the old post-payment meters, saying the pre-payment meters used to replace them had been proven to be “out of order.”
